Mr. Michael Moakley Grades 5-8 - Science Teacher 7th Grade Social Studies Teacher
B.S. - Science
I look at science as a tool for understanding the physical universe. This is the universe we occupy so understanding it can only enrich the experience of living in it. My goal is to convey this appreciation for the understanding to my students through a combination of hands on experience and lectures.
I see middle school as the bridge between the lower grades and high school. Here the students transition from learning how to read to reading to learn. It is place where the students master how to learn, in my case, learn science. I am here to prepare them for high school science. Science is as much about the process as it is about the outcome. Attention is given to the process of mastering the process as well as the content.
I am excited to have had the opportunity to teach science at St. Mary’s for the past six years. Science is a discipline that I love to teach, and I continually look forward sharing my passion with the students of St. Mary’s School. Parochial schools have a long history of producing successful and well-educated students. It is well known statistically, that most of these students go on to college and contribute well to society. This is the kind of system I align myself with as a teacher.
I came to St. Mary’s after more than a decade in clinical medicine at University of Massachusetts Medical Center where, in addition, I have co-authored a number of papers, been involved in research projects, and occasionally lectured at conferences. Prior to that time I spent ten years in the Army. The peacetime mission of the military is to maintain proficiency through education. This resulted in spending half my time in a teaching role. I finished my time in the service running a training department where one of my primary duties involved teaching.
