Shrewsbury Thanksgiving Benefit Concert
Sunday, November 20 at 6:00 pm
First Congregational Church of Shrewsbury

The Ecumenical Service will be preceded by a concert to benefit the Worcester County Food Bank. The benefit concert will start at 6:00 PM and feature the WPI Brass Ensemble. This 16 member honors ensemble from WPI will present a wide range of magnificent music for brass, using both the FCC organs and an array of percussion. Admission to the concert is free, but a collection will be taken (suggested donation of $10 general admission and $5 for children & students) to benefit the Worcester County Food Bank.

The concert is being presented in partnership with the WPI Music Department, and is a great way to support a wonderful charity, the Worcester County Food Bank, at a time of the year when feeding people in need is such a real concern. For more information about these events, or to sing in the community choir, please contact the First Congregational Church of Shrewsbury at 508-845-7286 or email the church office at office@fccsm.org.

MASS on THANKSGIVING DAY
Thursday, November 24 at 8:30 am
St. Mary’s Church.

Begin your Thanksgiving Day by giving God thanks around the Table of the Eucharist and receive again the gift of God’s love and abundant blessings. Then your Thanksgiving dinner and the time you spend with family and friends will have even more meaning. Please bring a bag of non-perishable food with you to Mass on Thanksgiving and bring it forward to the altar during the offertory procession. These gifts of food will be given to St. Anne’s Food Pantry. St. Anne’s Human Services expects to prepare over 400 Thanksgiving baskets for families in need in our community. Our donations will help to restock the shelves after Thanksgiving Day so that the growing number of people who are turning to food pantries in their need can be served.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION WEEK

Every year at this time we stop to celebrate the hundreds of faithfilled men and women who give of their time, faith and talents to the Catholic families of New England as Catechetical ministers. Their ministry to their parishes is of the utmost importance in the life of the Church. Teachers who take the hand of God’s children and lead them closer to Him will be blessed in ways known only to God. They give a special service in building the Kingdom of God on earth. St. Mary’s has over 100 such volunteers and we consider ourselves blessed. Please take time this week to thank a catechist in person, or drop a note or call and let them know how much you appreciate the gift they are to our parish. Thank you and God bless you!

St. Mary’s Staff

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

In addition to the weekly hours of Eucharistic Adoration held on Fridays from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm in the Pastoral Center chapel, we would like to expand this opportunity for prayer to Tuesday evenings in the church from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. In order to begin we will need two people to be present each week for half-hour time slots. Please sign up after Mass today in the sacristy or call the pastoral center at 845-6341.

St. Mary School offers a heart felt thank you following the St. Mary School 50th Anniversary Gala weekend. To the 50th Anniversary Gala planning committee, we thank you for the time and talent which you have dedicated to the Gala over the past year.

To the 50 Alumni Mass ministers, we thank each of you for returning to a St. Mary School mass as witness to the continued presence of God in your lives.

To our guests who braved the record breaking October Nor’easter, we offer a most sincere thank you. Our hope is that you experienced an elegant evening of memories, reconnecting, and jubilant celebration.

In Gratitude

“Nothing is more honorable than a grateful heart.”

On Saturday, November 5th, the families of parishioners who died since last All Souls Day gathered for a beautiful Mass of Remembrance. Following Mass, everyone was invited to a breakfast buffet in the parish hall. As in past years, the cost of the breakfast was generously paid for by Britton Funeral Homes. Britton owner and St. Mary’s parishioner, Shannon Henry, and Britton staff members were present to offer support and help serve breakfast to our grieving families. We extend our deepest gratitude to Britton Funeral Homes owners/directors Shannon Henry & David Bellerose for their generosity and many kindnesses in making this annual event possible.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

The Bereavement Ministry extends a very special thanks to those who made the annual Mass of Remembrance and breakfast a source of healing and consolation for our grieving families.

To Monsignor Mike Rose and Fr. Marcin Nowicki - for blessing us with your gentle and caring ministry, consoling words, and ongoing love for our families. Rick Vacca and Kristin DeFosse – your beautiful music enhanced a very moving liturgy. To parish greeters – Bob Terry and Ellen O’Connor of the Pastoral Council, and the staff of Britton Funeral Homes for your warm welcome. To our Candle Lighter, Jean Marie Carey; and to Altar Server April Bernier, for enriching our liturgy. To Kelly Jefferson for the beautiful altar cards and graphics; to Kerry Martineau and Cliff Jefferson, for your invaluable assistance with invitations and responses. To Shannon Henry, Jim McWilliams Doug Sears and John Semites of Britton Funeral Homes – for assisting as greeters, servers, hosts and for generously underwriting the cost of breakfast for our families. And finally, a special thanks to those who created an atmosphere of hospitality and comfort at the breakfast following the Mass. Chairman Susan Zybert and Committee: Carol McWilliams, Mary Daly, and Susan Leahy, and to Parish Council Members: Bob Terry, Ellen O’Connor, assisted by set-up helpers, Mary Pat & Jamie Calderwood and their children, David Jefferson, Cliff Jefferson and Jim McWilliams. Your generous hearts, talents, and presence were greatly appreciated by all. In behalf of the many families who expressed their appreciation, thank you.

A Correction – Mass of Remembrance

Last week, the names of parishioners who died in the last year was listed in the bulletin, providing an opportunity for our parish to remember in prayer, those called home to God. Regretfully, the name of one long-time parishioner, Norma Secino, was omitted. Norma, 92, was a wonderful woman of faith, and with her husband, Dr. Bob Secino, raised their 7 children as active members of our St. Mary’s Parish family. Please remember to pray for Norma and her entire family during this month of remembering.

STEWARDSHIP AT ST. MARY’S PARISH
THE PARABLE OF THE TALENTS

God has left us in charge of His treasure; a wealth of spiritual and worldly gifts that include faith and prayer, family and neighbor, earth and sky, skills and talents. As we hear about the servants in today’s Gospel, the stewardship question is this: Will we nurture and cultivate our God-given gifts, making them active, productive and transforming? Or are these gifts to be wrapped up and safely tucked away; waiting to be handed back to the Lord without increase? Do we see our discipleship as preserving and hiding what we have been given? Or do we see our lives as stewards, actively and urgently involved in Christ’s redemptive transformation of the world? Are you ready to accept the Parable of the Talents challenge?

STEWARDSHIP IN ACTION A PARTNERSHIP
St. Mary’s Parish, Shrewsbury, MA and
St. Michel’s, Roche-a-Bateau, Haiti

Thank-you for your generous support in last weekend’s special collection for St. Michel’s in Haiti. You contributed $5,532 which will go towards our monthly commitment to St. Michel’s and some special projects we would like to fund this year. Thank-you to Joe Cantin and Charlie Eisenmann who spoke at all the Masses and Lynne Perreault who prepared the video presentation. The video and the text of Joe Cantin’s talk can be found on the parish website (click here). If you were not with us last weekend, please take a moment to view them.

Envelopes for donations to support our “sister” parish in Haiti will be available this weekend. After traveling to Haiti and seeing the great need, we have increased our covenant with St. Michel’s to $1,000 a month which enables the parish and its school to do a great deal that would not be possible without our assistance.

STEWARDSHIP MAILING

A Stewardship mailing was sent to parish households this past week asking you to renew your commitment to St. Mary’s. A list of the more than 90 ministries at St. Mary’s can be found on the parish website (click here). Please renew your commitment next weekend to the ministries in which you are involved and/or express your interest to serve in one or more ministries. We also encourage you to renew your commitment to the Sunday offertory next Sunday by returning the commitment form you received in the mail. Please consider using ParishPay this coming year instead of the weekly envelopes. You will also find information about ParishPay on our website (click here).

CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

Right now, in the United States, 44 million people are classified by the federal government as living in poverty. That’s one out of every seven Americans, and one out of every five children. Since 1969, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has supported works of charity and justice by funding local, regional and national community groups whose goals are to solve problems and change policies that keep low-income residents in poverty. This annual national collection is the primary source of funding for CCHD’s anti-poverty grants and education programs. During the 2010-2011 grant cycle CCHD put nearly $8 million into community efforts to fight poverty.

Each October I have the privilege of meeting with our parish and community groups and presenting them with the local grants from this campaign. It is always inspiring to me to see how small seeds can grow into fruitful programs to help people maintain dignity in the face of poverty.

To learn more about the Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development and the groups it funds by visiting them online at www.usccb.org/cchd. Through CCHD, the catholic Church is working to seek justice in light of Catholic social teaching. Please help the efforts of CCHD to break the cycle of poverty through your generous financial support on November 19 and 20.

The St. Mary Elves workshop group is seeking donations of: Crosses’ Booklets, Religious key chains, Chaplets, Rosary, accessories, Children’s Rosaries, Devotionals, Medals, and Prayer cards.

If you have any of the above items to re-purpose we gladly accept your donations. A box labeled Elves will be in the front vestibule of the church until mid-November.
