HOSPITAL VISITS AND COMMUNION CALLS

Msgr. Mike and Fr. Adam make regular visits to the UMass – Memorial and St. Vincent Hospitals each week to visit parishioners who are patients there. Because of patient privacy laws, they do not always know if a parishioner has been hospitalized. Please call the pastoral center to let us know if a family member or neighbor has been hospitalized or is a patient in a local rehabilitation and nursing center. If you are confined to your home due to illness or age, please call us at the pastoral center so that the priests and Vi Jefferson, our parish nurse, may visit you with communion.

A Stewardship Thought
June 20, 2010 - Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“But who do you say that I am?” Luke 9:18-24

Jesus asks his disciples, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” They respond with several names or possibilities. Then Jesus asks, “But who do you say that I am?” Now the question is personal. To answer they must reveal what is in their heart and head. Their answer will tell Jesus how they feel about him. Peter says: “You are the Christ of God.” That took great faith and courage. The implications were enormous; Jesus waste no time in bluntly telling them that the “Christ of God” was going to suffer; be rejected by the authorities; killed and rise on the third day.” Jesus leaves nothing to the imagination. Then he adds what his closest friends were most afraid to hear: “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily and follow me.” We may be relieved that we were not present with Jesus two thousand years ago. But Jesus is present with us today - in the Eucharist; in his Church. He asks each of us, “Who do you say that I am?” How do we answer him? Are we willing to accept the consequences?

Trust in the tender embrace of God’s mercy! It’s normal to grieve a pregnancy loss, including the loss of a child by abortion. It can form a hole in one’s heart, a hole so deep that sometimes it seems nothing can fill the emptiness. Project Rachel is the Catholic Church’s ministry of healing and reconciliation to those who have been wounded by abortion. Our services are free and strictly confidential. Call Project Rachel at 508-791-HOPE or learn more at www.hopeafterabortion.com.

Give your marriage a well deserved vacation. Plan to go on a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend and come back with a marriage that is refreshed and full of energy! Shining Stars

Shining Stars is an opportunity for parishioners to recognize other parishioners for their stewardship actions and deeds. Do you want to say “thanks” or acknowledge a parish member for being a good steward by using their time, talent, or treasure to serve others? You may recognize an individual, a family, a couple, a teenager or child – all recognitions are anonymous but we ask you to include your name and phone number for any clarifications, if necessary. Download a nomination form from the stewardship sections of our parish website: www.stmarysparish.org.

Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

THANK-YOU to all those who made their gift to this years PARTNERS IN CHARITY APPEAL during the month of May. We are well on our way in this year’s appeal, but we need everyone’s support in order to reach our parish goal of $175,000.

St. Mary’s Goal $175,000
Amount Raised in pledges/gifts 389
Number of Gifts $133,575

Answer the call of the Lord and sustain the works of charity, education and ministry in our diocese throughout the year. The needs increase each year simply because the needs of people continue to grow. More than 300,000 Catholics living in Worcester County and thousands of other people will benefit from your generosity. Over the years the St. Mary Parish family has consistently demonstrated its goodness to others. We are leaders in providing charitable, educational, pastoral and human services for others.

Envelopes for your gift/pledge can be found at the end of your pew today. You may place yours in the collection basket today or mail to the pastoral center during the week. Please be sure to check with your employer about a Matching Gift and attach the form to your pledge card.

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

I encourage you to be generous in the special Collection for The Works of the Holy Father, to be taken at the Lord's Day Masses in all the parishes throughout our diocese next weekend, June 26 and 27. This collection, often called the Peter's Pence Collection, is taken up from Catholics throughout the world.

Pope Benedict XVI wrote the following in his encyclical Charity in Truth. “God’s love. gives us the courage to continue seeking and working for the benefit of all” (Caritas in Veritate, no. 78).

The Peter’s Pence Collection enables the Holy Father to support victims of disaster, war, and oppression and others most in need of emergency assistance. The pope, being pastor of the whole Church, is attentive to the material needs of poor dioceses, religious institutes, and the faithful in grave difficulties. Through loving charity, the Holy Father casts Christ’s love upon the world.

For example, Nazareth Boys Town in Mbare, Rwanda, received assistance from Pope Benedict XVI for abandoned orphans who are victims of genocide and civil war. Casa di accoglienza Giovanni Paolo II Opera Don Orione, a residence that gives free shelter and specializes in assisting special-needs pilgrims traveling to Rome, was recently refurbished through the Peter’s Pence Collection. And in Bosnia, the Hospital of St. Vincent de Paul, a health institution in Sarajevo staffed by religious, was established with support from the Collection.

As we participate generously in the appeal, we join Catholics throughout the world in a loving expression of solidarity, sharing in the concern of the successor of Peter for the many different needs of the universal Church and for the relief of those most in need around the globe. Please join the Holy Father in his mission.

With every prayerful best wish, I am

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Robert J. McManus
Bishop of Worcester
