Members of Saints Francis & Therese Catholic Worker will be here next weekend, April 10 and 11, 2010, with our homemade baked goods. The sale of our wholesome bread and muffins, made with organic ingredients, is the main source of income which supports our ministries. We shelter homeless men and women, and we work for justice and peace. There is no set price for the bread as we prefer to depend on your generosity to carry on the works of mercy.

As we come together today to celebrate the great Feast of the Resurrection, let us rejoice in the hope and promise that Christ’s victory over death brings to all of us. For 40 days during Lent we have prepared for this day. This past week we have remembered Jesus’ Last Supper, Passion and Death on the Cross. And now we celebrate the Resurrection. The fasting has ended and the feasting begins. We will celebrate Easter for the next 50 days!

I want to express my deep thanks to the many parishioners who helped to make our liturgies of Holy Week and Easter such inspiring and faith-filled celebrations. Thank-you to Rick Vacca, Marti Page, choir members, musicians and cantors for the wonderful music which enriched our liturgies so much. Thank-you to Fr. Adam, the members of the Liturgy Committee and the Art & Environment Committee for the careful attention given to planning our celebrations and decorating the church and parish hall. Thanks to the lectors, ministers of communion, altar servers, greeter and ushers for serving in these ministries throughout the year. Thank-you to Deacon Frank and the RCIA team for leading our 4 adults to the Easter sacraments. Thank you to Jennifer Kiel and Mary Cote for coordinating the Palm Sunday passion readers and to Bob Pratt, Dan Musgrove and all those who participated in the Living Stations of the Cross on Good Friday. Thank-you to the parish staff for your extra efforts throughout Lent and Holy Week. May the Lord bless you, your families and all of us at St. Mary’s throughout this Easter season. May we experience the joy and the promise that Jesus’ Resurrection brings.

Happy Easter!
Msgr. Mike

ST. MARY’S BUILDING PROJECT UPDATE

Our parish building project continues to move forward on schedule. The plastering is now being completed on the first floor of the new addition and the painting has begun on the second floor. The interior of the new addition is truly beginning to take shape and will be as impressive as the exterior of the building is. With ceiling and flooring remaining along with the millwork and bathrooms, we are looking to a completion date in the early summer. Check out some of the construction pictures on the parish website: click here.

THANK-YOU to all those parishioners who have recently made their pledge to the Capital Campaign – Our Enduring Covenant. Thanks also to those parishioners who have been faithfully making payments on their pledges. If you have not had an opportunity yet to make your pledge, we encourage you to do so in the coming weeks. Pledge envelopes and brochures can be found in the front vestibule or at the pastoral center during the week.

CONGRATULATIONS to the families and the children who were baptized during the month of March:

Let us open our hearts…Our Good God Will Open His

THANK-YOU to all those who have made their gift over the last two weeks to our annual Partners in Charity Appeal. We are well on our way in this year’s appeal, but we need everyone’s support in order to reach our parish goal of $175,000.

Partners in Charity supports 29 vital programs which comprise the charitable, educational and ministerial mission of our diocese. Your gift to the appeal this year will provide assistance for the poor, the sick, the young, the disabled, families in crisis, and many thousands more. Our appeal is an opportunity to provide for the needs of others who look to us for hope. Please reflect on the blessings you have received from God as you contemplate a gift to the Partners in Charity Appeal this year. Please put the gift/pledge envelope you received in the mail in with today’s offertory collection. You may also use one of the envelopes found on the window sills.

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

On the first Easter Sunday, Mary Magdalene, Mary, the mother of James, and Salome, hurried to a newly-carved tomb to anoint the body of the Lord. In their concern before such a difficult task, they said to one another, “Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” (Mark 16:3)

When they arrived, they found that the stone had already been moved, and they were greeted with the words, “You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised.” (Mark 16: 4-6) Jesus had indeed been raised from the dead! Through Him the tomb had become the fertile ground of life’s victory over death, and our lives were changed forever by His resurrection.

How wonderful it is to hear the good news of the Lord’s resurrection again on this Easter Sunday! How much we need this assurance and encouragement! For too many still live in the dark grave of fear, rejection, loneliness, sin and poverty. Too many still ask, as we sometimes ask, “Will we ever see the light again?” As we pass through life, the haunting question of the women is still often asked, “Who will roll back the stone for us?”

Easter proclaims that God will roll back the stone! For Easter is a day of hope reborn, of courage renewed and of faith restored. The foundation of this enduring hope and renewed faith is our deep conviction that Jesus is truly risen from the dead, and that He now reigns as the Lord of life, who will unite all of us with God. “If Christ has not been raised,” wrote St. Paul, “then empty is our preaching.” (I Corinthians 15:14)

At Easter, it is good for each of us, worried as we might be about our personal problems, as well as those of our nation and our world, to recall these truths, and to savor the great mystery that restores our courage and rekindles our hope. Easter is the proof that the discouragement we face in the world will give way to the bright promise of the Lord’s victory over sin and death.

Hear the Easter proclamation with joy in your hearts this year! Let the good news roll the large stones of your burdens away, and allow the bright light of Christ’s glorious victory to shine. For that victory invites us to share in the Lord’s risen and everlasting life.

With every prayerful best wish for a Happy and Blessed Easter, I remain

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Robert J. McManus
Bishop of Worcester
