HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF

THANK-YOU for your most generous response to last week’s special collection for the earthquake relief efforts now underway in Haiti. St. Mary parishioners donated $11,531 which has now been sent to Catholic Relief Services. Your outpouring of support will help buoy the relief efforts as CRS workers move food, water and medical supplies to quake survivors. CRS is trucking supplies overland from the Dominican Republic and shipping USAID Food for Peace food and other aid into Haitian ports north of Port-au-Prince. CRS staff are working at 11 distribution points in Port-au-Prince, mainly informal camps set up by those who have left their damaged homes. They are handing ouT food, hygiene kits and medical supplies. CRS President Ken Hackett, commenting on the state of Port-au-Prince, where some 3 million people are estimated to have been affected said, “There is no way that everyone can be taken care of immediately. This was just too great a disaster. We are working as hard and as fast as we can and in doing that we have helped thousands of people and we will get aid to thousands more in the coming days.” CRS staff have been working in Haiti for 55 years. They have an extensive network of aid partners in the country, including Catholic schools, hospitals and health centers. If you have not had the opportunity to make your donation to CRS, you may do so this weekend or during the coming week. Place an envelope marked “Haiti Earthquake Relief” in the collection basket or send to the pastoral center.

THANK-YOU to a group of young girls from St. Mary’s who wanted to help out with raising funds for relief efforts in Haiti. They made headbands and sold-out after one Mass last weekend. Here is their “thank-you” note to the people of St. Mary’s.

Dear Msgr. Mike,

We raised 171 dollars for Haiti. We didn’t think we would raise that much money. But we did! We are all so proud and happy we could help. Thank-you for letting us sell the hair accessories after Mass. If we didn’t we would never have raised that much money.

Thank you sooo much!

Sincerely,
Caroline Calderwood, Maggie Sackinsky, Mackenzie Terry and Megan Calderwood

SCOUT SUNDAY

The 5:30 pm Mass on January 31st will be the Scout Sunday Mass. This Mass recognizes the contributions of young people and adults to Scouting. Scouts provides fun, fellowship, and training to our youth while emphasizing honesty, self-reliance, and respect. Through a year-round program, it affects character, citizenship, and personal fitness. We want to offer a special prayer and word of thanks to the leaders of Troop and Pack 158 of St. Mary's. All Cub Scouts and Boy Scout are welcome.

To all adult parishioners:

Join us for St. Mary’s Bible Study in Lent and the Easter season. Fr. John O’Brien, CP will lead us in studying the prophet Isaiah, often called the 5th gospel. We will also study the heroism of Daniel. Classes will be on Mondays from 9:30 – 11:30 am from February 15th – May 10th in Matthews room in the pastoral center.

BECOMING THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF – Living Every Day with Passion and Purpose - by Matthew Kelly

Fundamental truths conveyed in a clear, effect manner. Matthew Kelly will be one of the keynote speakers at this year’s Men’s Conference. He possesses a powerful ability to combine the ageless tool of storytelling with a profound understanding of today’s culture and the common yearnings of the human heart. He shows us how to see the challenges in our everyday lives in a new light.

FAITH - By Dr. Peter Kreeft

How do we understand our Catholic faith? This presentation explains the relationship between faith and reason, faith and authority, and faith and the Church.

ANGER AND FORGIVENESS - Deacon Dr. Bob McDonald

This CD provides a spiritual and psychological prescription for overcoming the sinful anger that poisons the mind of Christ within, causing alienation and division. His practical wisdom shows that only by learning how to forgive can we hope to promote healing and understanding in our relationships.

OUR ENDURING COVENANT
The Campaign Continues

Construction progress remains on schedule and the installation of windows was completed this past week. Plumbers, electricians, HVAC, fire alarm and sprinkler subcontractors are now hard at work in the interior of the building. THANK-YOU to the many St. Mary Parishioners who have been generous in their support of our capital campaign. If you have not had the opportunity to make your pledge to OUR ENDURING COVENANT, please consider doing so this month. Pledge envelopes are available at the entrances of the church and at the pastoral center.

THANKS FOR UNDERSTANDING….

Last weekend as people were leaving Mass many found a card on the windshield of their cars endorsing one of the candidates in the recent election for U.S. Senate. Please know that St. Mary Parish and the Catholic Church do not endorse any individual candidates running for elective office. The person/people responsible for placing the political advertisements on you car in the parish parking lot did not seek permission to do so and would not have been granted permission had they asked.

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Through the generosity of the Catholic Home Missions Appeal, Catholics living in more established dioceses across our nation have joined their hearts to those living in domestic mission areas who hunger for the Gospel.

The Archdiocese of Anchorage, for example, has 11,500 registered Catholic families living within a region as vast as 140,000 square miles, and only 30 active diocesan priests. Of the 29 counties in the geographically sprawling Diocese of Salt Lake City, only 16 have a resident pastor.

Year after year, this appeal helps dioceses that cannot provide basic pastoral services to their people without outside help. This assistance is essential to scattered and isolated churches. Your donations support a wide range of pastoral activities with special emphasis on evangelization, religious education, ministry training for priests, deacons, religious sisters and lay people, and support of poor parishes.

I encourage you to be generous to the 2010 Catholic Home Missions Appeal, a special collection to be taken at the Lord’s Day Masses in all the parishes throughout our diocese next weekend, January 30th and 31st. Through our personal generosity in this important appeal, we will all share in the work of evangelization in the United States.

Grateful for your goodness and asking the Lord to bless you, I am

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Robert J. McManus
Bishop of Worcester

ECO-JUSTICE MINISTRY

Change a light, and you help change the world. Replace the conventional bulbs in your 5 most frequently used light fixtures with bulbs that have the ENERGY STAR and you will help the environment while saving money on energy bills. If every household in the U.S. took this one simple action we would prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions from nearly 10 million cars, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Interested in information on climate change? EPA offers a detailed link at its website: http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/

St. Mary School alumnus Ralph Masiello (The Icky Bug man) will be visiting the school February 2, 2010 (8:30am) as part of the nation’s Catholic Schools Week celebration. His presentation will include the story of his journey from the halls of St. Mary’s to his current International success, as well as a hands on art demonstration. The event is open to the young children of Shrewsbury. Seats are limited and registration is required. Contact Sira Naras in the St. Mary School alumni office for more information. naras@stmarysparish.org or 508.845.6341. Funded by the Shrewsbury Cultural Council.

St. Anne's Food Bank in Shrewsbury is requesting 50 plus "Birthday Bags" for 2010. The birthday bags typically consist of a cake mix, frosting, candles and perhaps a book/small toy in a gift bag. They will be distributed to local children who would not receive a cake on their birthday without our help. Please assist in anyway you can - a complete gift bag or select items mentioned above. (There is also a need for disposable cake tins.) Representatives from the 8th grade will be collecting these donations in the parish hall between the hours of 8:45 - 12:15 on Sunday January 31st. Please contact Janet Hevey 508.842.8111 with any questions. Thank you for your support!

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT
January 24 – Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

There exists in our parish community a diversity of unique gifts. God has provided us with these gifts in order to advance His Kingdom. Our sisters and brothers in other Christian denominations have also been blessed with unique gifts that are being used for the same purpose. This week, the Annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity comes to a close. We pray that throughout the year all Christians would be good stewards of their relationships, seeking to understand each other, being always patient and humble, and listening to one another, so that the Body of Christ may be truly united.
