HAITI – A PARTNERSHIP
St. Mary Parish, Shrewsbury & St. Michel Parish, Roche-a-Bateau, Haiti

Thank you to Charlie Eisenmann for speaking at all of the Masses last weekend about his recent trip to Haiti and visit to our sister parish there, St. Michel’s in Roche-a-Bateau. He captured for us the essence of our parish twinning relationship and told of how our monthly support is actually helping people in great need. Because of your continued generosity last weekend, we will be able to continue with our monthly commitment of $800. The Haiti Committee will also be discussing additional projects that we can assist with at St. Michel’s. This coming month we will send additional money so that the parish can sponsor a Christmas party for the elderly. Thank-you to the parishioners who were so generous in last week’s collection for Haiti – we collected $3,885 ! ! Thank-you to Joe Cantin and the members of the Haiti Committee who have been coordinating our efforts here at St. Mary’s. Envelopes for donations to support our sister parish can be found in the vestibule of the church by the bulletins. Let us continue to pray for our brothers and sisters throughout Haiti and especially at St. Michel’s.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION WEEK

This week celebrates Religious Education and those who make it happen in all of our New England Dioceses. It affords all of us the opportunity to appreciate the dedication and service of the many men and women in parishes all over New England. We have 115 wonderful teachers at St. Mary’s who minister to 1,023 students in our programs. There is nothing more meaningful in life than to take the hand of another and journey with them to the Father. If you know a CCD teacher, take the time to say ‘thanks’ and pray for all of us who delight in this special ministry - thank you! Sue Landry, Gina Kuruvilla and Laura Osborne

HELP WANTED

I need some volunteers who would substitute on Saturday mornings to teach our 1st graders when a teacher can’t come in. If you can help us out at 9:00 am or 11:00 am, please call Sue Landry at 508.925.7801 Thanks so much!

Attention Last Year’s Catechists:

GREEN TIP FROM THE ECO JUSTICE MINISTRY

Dress for the weather ( source: The little green Handbook) You will save energy and money by reaching into your closet before you reach for the thermostat. And remember: the layered look never goes out of style. Just add or remove a layer of clothing to maintain a comfortable body temperature all year long. When the weather heats up, just peel off a layer. When you feel a chill in the air, grab a sweater.

STEWARDSHIP IN ACTION - ST. MARY’S SHINING STARS

Shining Stars is an opportunity for parishioners to recognize other parishioners for their stewardship actions and deeds. Do you want to say “thanks” or acknowledge a parish member for being a good steward by using their time, talent or treasure to serve others? You may recognize an individual, a family, a couple, a teenager or child. Pick up a recognition form today in the vestibule or down load a copy from the Stewardship section of our parish website.

Today we announce November’s Shining Star:

DORIS RACINE

Doris Racine is a quiet but visible presence in many areas of St. Mary’s parish life. She has been primarily responsible for Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the chapel each Friday morning. She is dedicated to being there and making sure the chapel is staffed for the adoration hours. She is a Eucharistic Minister at Mass and to those confined at home. She is part of the Health Ministry as one of the Angel Group, sending notes of encouragement to those ill or elderly, and visiting friends in nursing homes. She attends courses and bible studies to deepen her knowledge and faith. Her friendly manner and words are a blessing to all who experience her interests and friendship.

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

As I write to you, many American families are struggling to make ends meet. Some people we know have lost jobs, homes and health insurance, or have watched their retirement funds disappear. When we consider the broader implications of the economic downturn, however, we realize that 37 million of our fellow citizens live in poverty. 13 million of them are children.

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development helps people rise above the poverty line by funding programs that focus on the root causes of poverty. It creates community-based solutions to the problem of poverty by funding programs that promote self-sufficiency. These compassionate projects in the Diocese of Worcester and throughout the U.S. support low-income people as they work together to improve educational opportunities, create jobs, and improve access to services for the disabled.

I urge you to give generously to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development next weekend, November 21-22. We commit 75% of the donations to the national office to support their projects across the country. We keep 25% here in the Diocese to fund local self-help initiatives to benefit communities in Central Massachusetts and awarded many grants just a few weeks ago.

With every prayerful best wish, I am

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Robert J. McManus
Bishop of Worcester
