A PARTNERSHIP
St. Mary’s Parish, Shrewsbury, MA
and St. Michel’s, Roche-a-Bateau, Haiti
Charlie Eisenmann, a member of St. Mary’s Haiti Committee, will be speaking at all of the Masses this weekend, November 7 & 8. Charlie recently returned from Haiti where he had the opportunity to visit with Fr. Beliard, the Pastor of St. Michel’s parish in Rochea Bateau, and to renew our twinning covenant. Charlie will speak to us about the relationship St. Mary’s has with St. Michel’s and of his experience witnessing how our support makes a dramatic difference in the lives of the people of St. Michel’s parish. Envelopes for donations to support our “sister” parish in Haiti will be available next weekend. Our covenant with St. Michel’s is $800 a month which enables the parish to do a great deal that would not be possible without our assistance.

Shrewsbury Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service MASS AT ST. MARY’S |

Think about the storm drains on our streets! These drains remove rain water from the streets. Oil, antifreeze and other fluids that leak from your car are washed into these drains that flow directly into our waterways. In the U.S., it is estimated that petroleum washed off the pavement every year, along with dirty oil dumped directly into storm drains, sends 15 times more oil into the ocean than the Exxon Valdez did. One pint of motor oil can contaminate 125,000 gallons of drinking water and make an oil slick about the size of two football fields. (Source: A Homeowner’s Guide to Protecting Water Quality in the Blackstone Valley). Don’t use storm drains as dumps for oil, chemicals, trash or pet waste. If you car develops a leak, fix it as soon as you can.

S.T.O.P
Students Together Opposing Prejudice
S.T.O.P. is a local education initiative begun in 1991 by three different Faith Organizations in Sudbury. S.T.O.P. is coming to the area and is being sponsored by Shrewsbury’s St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Wellspring United Methodist Church, Trinity Episcopal Church, St. Nicholas Romanian Orthodox Christian Church, Westborough’s Congregation B’nai Shalom, and the Islamic Center of Wayland.
The program is a seven-week curriculum aimed at middle school students. The weekly 1 ½ hour sessions are rotated among the participating houses of worship from mid-January to early March. The goal is to begin with some students who are concerned about issues of tolerance and prejudice, open their eyes to the many forms of bigotry and racism, and give them strategies to confront racism when they encounter it.
The participants learn that racial unity comes through recognition of the value of individuals and the celebration of every person’s uniqueness. They also learn to appreciate that every community is enriched by its diversity. We’re looking for interested seventh, eighth, or ninth graders, as well as older high school students with insights. Parents are also welcome. Please contact Mary Cote (cotem@stmarysparish.org) for more information.
