St. Mary of the Hills announces its new Mass Schedule!

Beginning the weekend of November 14/15

Saturday Vigil – 4:30
Sunday – 9:00 and 11:15 am

Great progress has been made this past month at the St. Mary’s Construction site. The steel structure for the new building was erected in just two days. Now the welders are at work, the cement floor for the second floor has been poured, and the building is now being enclosed with vapor barriers and insulation. Within a few weeks the masons will begin their work laying the bricks. We hope to have the entire building enclosed before the first snowfall. Visit the parish web site for pictures that show all the work that has been accomplished since May.

We are encouraged with our building project and grateful to all those parishioners who have made a gift/pledge to the capital campaign. As the construction continues, so does our capital campaign. At the end of the fiscal year on August 31, 2009 we had a total of:

486 pledges
130 additional gifts
$3,675,000 raised

The capital campaign continues because we need to raise an addition $1.4 million. If you have not made a pledge to the campaign, please consider doing so during the month of November. Pledge envelopes can be found with the bulletins in the vestibule of the church and at the pastoral center.

STEWARDSHIP AT ST. MARY’S
BUILDING UP – REACHING OUT

Thank-you to all the parishioners who came to last week’s Stewardship Ministry Fair and to all the chairs of various ministries who creatively displayed their activities and invited people to join them. Everyone who took time to visit the tables at the Ministry Fair walked away amazed at the level of activity and ministry in our parish. We are grateful for so many good stewards in our parish community. We invite parishioners to join any of our parish and school ministries by filling out one of the Stewardship forms that can be found by the bulletins this weekend.

A PARTNERSHIP
St. Mary’s Parish, Shrewsbury, MA and St. Michel’s, Roche-a-Bateau, Haiti

Charlie Eisenmann, a member of St. Mary’s Haiti Committee, will be speaking at all of the Masses next weekend, November 7 & 8. Charlie recently returned from Haiti where he had the opportunity to visit with Fr. Beliard, the Pastor of St. Michel’s parish in Roche-a Bateau, and to renew our twinning covenant. Charlie will speak to us about the relationship St. Mary’s has with St. Michel’s and of his experience witnessing how our support makes a dramatic difference in the lives of the people of St. Michel’s parish.

Envelopes for donations to support our “sister” parish in Haiti will be available next weekend. Our covenant with St. Michel’s is $800 a month which enables the parish to do a great deal that would not be possible without our assistance.

WASTE LESS FOOD TO FIGHT GLOBAL WARMING AND SAVE MONEY

Americans throw away anywhere from one quarter to one half of their food, which leads to tons of greenhouse gas emissions and billions of lost dollars. Food scraps are the third-largest contributor to U.S. waste, comprising upwards of 50 million tons. Some studies estimate that reducing food waste by half could cut negative environmental impacts by up to 25%. Freeze more food so it doesn’t go bad. Find a local food bank or homeless shelter that accepts donations. Or, try composting your turned or moldy vegetables. Whatever you do, consider all possible uses for your food before you throw it away.

Dear Monsignor/Father,

Due to the rise in incidence of the flu in Worcester County, I am promulgating the following directives for the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy during this flu season. These directives reinforce recommended practices to reduce the transmission of the flu and will go into effect beginning October 31, 2009 until March 31, 2010 unless notified otherwise.

  1. The distribution of the Precious Blood for the faithful is suspended, with the exception of those who must receive from the cup, i.e. priests, deacons, or those who must receive due to medical reasons. The Catholic Church teaches that Christ, whole and entire, is received even under only one species.
  2. The exchange of the Sign of Peace is to be offered without any physical contact. When the priest extends the invitation for the sign of peace, the faithful instead of a handshake, may bow to the persons nearby.
  3. All ministers of Holy Communion should use hand sanitizer prior to the distribution of Holy Communion. Alcohol-based or other appropriate waterless hand sanitizers should be made available on the credence table for such use.
  4. Parishioners should be reminded that if they are ill or suspect they are ill with a contagious illness, they are not bound by the Sunday Mass obligation. They should remain home and return to church when they are well.

Most Reverend Robert J. McManus
Bishop of Worcester

MINISTRY WORKSHOPS

The workshops are open to anyone already in a ministry or anyone who wishes to become a Lector or Eucharistic Minister. There will be sign-up sheets available in the church.

Mass of Remembrance & Breakfast
Saturday, November 7, 2009 ~ 8:30 a.m.

In November, we set aside time to remember our brothers and sisters who have been called home to Christ. A memorial book will be placed on the altar, and parishioners are invited to write the names of their loved ones in it so that we can remember them at Mass throughout the month.

On Saturday, November 7th, the parish will also celebrate a special Mass of Remembrance at 8:30 a.m. The names of parishioners who have died this past year will be read and a candle will be lit in their memories. The names and candles will remain on the altar for the remainder of the month.

Immediately following Mass, the parish will host a breakfast in the parish hall. All are invited. RSVP to the Pastoral Center at 508.845.6341 by Monday, November 2nd if you plan on attending the breakfast.
