FESTIVAL THANKS FROM FR. MIKE

THANK-YOU to everyone who made last weekend’s FAMILY FESTIVAL such a wonderful experience of community. Kids of all ages had some “good ol’ fashion fun” all weekend long. THANK-YOU to all the committee members and chairs who put in countless hours preparing for the weekend, especially Co-chairs Jack Carney and Mike Lovelace. THANK-YOU to all the people of St. Mary’s Parish & School and Friends of St. Mary’s who made generous donations to the festival. And THANK-YOU to all who came and spent part of their weekend with us. CONGRATULATIONS to the winners of the Festival Grand Raffle – Nancy Conley won the first prize of $15,000 and Kenneth Dunn won the tickets to the Red Sox and Patriots games.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS COLLECTION

The Diocese of Worcester will be holding its 2009 Annual Appeal for Catholic Schools this weekend. Your support is greatly appreciated as St. Mary School uses the funds to support tuition assistance, technology improvements and special educational projects for the children. Proceeds from this second collection at St. Mary’s will support our own parish school or you may designate your gift to another diocesan or parish school.

RCIA OPEN HOUSE If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a Catholic or if you are a Catholic who would like to complete your initiation through the sacraments of Confirmation and/or Eucharist, the Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) can help. The RCIA forms adults in the catholic faith and prepares them for the sacraments of initiation. For additional information please call Fr. Mike, Fr Adam or Deacon Frank at the pastoral center. An RICA OPEN HOUSE will be held on Sunday, September 27 at 6:30 pm in the Pastoral Center. All are Welcome.

STEWARDSHIP IN ACTION - ST. MARY’S SHINING STAR

Shining Stars is an opportunity for parishioners to recognize another parishioner for their stewardship actions and deeds. Do you want to say “thanks” or acknowledge a parish member for being a good steward by using their time, talent or treasure to serve others? You may recognize an individual, a family, a couple, a teenage or child.

Today we announce September’s Shining Star:

ANN BENBENEK

As a busy wife, mother and middle-school teacher, Ann always has time to share with our parish. It is obvious that the Sunday Eucharist is at the heart of her life, because so much of what she does is centered on the Eucharist. At St. Mary’s Ann serves as a Grade 2 CCD teacher, helping to prepare young children for their First Penance and First Communion. She coordinates the adult leaders for the Children’s Liturgy of the Word at the 9:00 am Sunday Masses and helps to organize the children who sing at that Mass. In addition she and her husband are Eucharistic Ministers and Ann serves on the parish Religious Education Board. Thank-you Ann for sharing your gifts with the children and families of St. Mary’s!

Dear St. Mary’s Parishioners,

The teachers, students and staff at St. Mary School want to express our appreciation to all those who spent many hours here this past weekend. The Family Festival was a great success. The Festival Committee under the leadership of Jack Carney and Mike Lovelace put in countless hours for our students and the school. Special thanks to all the parish members who volunteered their time to make this a fun family weekend.

It was great to see parishioners volunteering at Gerardo’s Trattoria and the many booths throughout the festival. This was a wonderful example of our parish and school coming together and celebrating the gift of family in the many forms it may take.

On behalf of St Mary School my sincere thanks.

Warm regards,
Joan T. Barry

The Volunteer Committee of the Family Festival would like to thank everyone who took the time to volunteer at the Family Festival. We hope that your volunteer experience was fun and that you felt a sense of pride in our Parish community. Thank you again!

RESPECT LIFE NEWS

Respect Life Sunday October 4, 2009

Shrewsbury will have its annual Life Chain on Sunday, October 4 from 2:00-3:30 pm at White City Plaza, Shrewsbury. Signs will be available. Please join us.

Respect-Life License Plate

There is an effort underway to encourage the state of Massachusetts to create a specialty license plate with the slogan “Choose Life.” Funds generated by a Massachusetts’ Choose Life plate would, as is already the case in 22 other states, assist women with the expenses of a full term pregnancy such as medical bills, temporary housing, food and maternity clothing. The process of ordering a “Choose Life” license plate is an easy one and only a minimal cost, over and above the usual expense of registering a vehicle, is required.

We here in Massachusetts only have until September 30th to voice our support of life through a Choose Life license plate. Applications will be available at Masses in the weeks ahead, along with representatives from the St. Mary’s parish Pro-Life Ministry. Please consider this wonderful opportunity to promote respect for life while assisting unborn children and their mothers.

ECO JUSTICE

Charge your cell phone in your car. (source: The little green handbook)

Charge your cell phone while on the go, using energy from your car battery. You will enjoy the same fully charged cell phone, but from an energy source that regenerates itself from the car engine. Cell phone chargers drain energy from electrical outlets while they charge your phone. And if you leave your charger plugged in after you finish using it, it continues to draw unnecessary energy.

Use the dishwasher (source: The little green handbook)

Put the sponge down and step away from the sink. An energy efficient dishwasher requires less than 5 gallons of water to clean a full load of dishes, so why are you still washing by hand? You will save time and thousands of gallons of hot water each year by loading your dishwasher to capacity and allowing it to do its job. And you already know the equation: less hot water equals lower energy and water bills. Of course, whether it’s the dishwasher or the washing machine, you should only wash full loads to save water and energy.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY

Do you want to share your faith with the children of the parish? Is a weekly commitment too much to give? Then join us as a leader for Children’s Liturgy of the Word at the 9am Sunday Mass. Leaders are typically scheduled 8-9 times a year. Materials and training are provided. Please contact Ann Benbenek 508.842.9651 or annbenbenek@yahoo.com for more information. Not sure if this is for you? Come by and see what we do! CLotW is held every Sunday except the first Sunday of the month.

My brothers and sisters in Christ,

I wish to express my gratitude to the parishioners of Saint Mary Parish for your generosity to the Annual Partners in Charity Appeal. As you know, the parish has exceeded its goal. In light of this important accomplishment, I offer my deepest appreciation to you.

In 2009, we have recalled the faithful love of one of the Church’s most beloved saints, St. Paul, our Diocesan patron. As we have worked together to provide for the needs of thousands of people in the Diocese of Worcester in the year ahead, we have shared St. Paul’s words from his First Letter to the Thessalonians, “Work in faith…Labor in love… Endure in hope.” Your support of 29 charitable, educational and pastoral programs is an excellent witness of your own Christian generosity.

I am very grateful for the efforts of Msgr. Rose as well as those who helped to promote the annual appeal in the parish. Please be assured of my appreciation for the goodness of those parishioners who joined together as Partners in Charity to enable this accomplishment.

Please pray that St. Paul will continue to bless our efforts. Many parishes are continuing to conduct the Annual Partners in Charity Appeal. Thousands of individual families throughout the diocese have yet to make their gifts. Following your inspiring example, it is my hope that together we will continue to build on what we have already accomplished in this campaign and meet our Diocesan goal.

With every prayerful best wish, I am

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Robert J. McManus
Bishop of Worcester
