My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

In Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical of a few weeks ago, Charity in Truth (Caritas in Veritate), the Holy Father wrote, “Charity in truth, to which Jesus Christ bore witness by his earthly life and especially by his death and resurrection, is the principal driving force behind the authentic development of every person and of all humanity.” (Introduction)

The 2009 Collection to Aid the Church in Central and Eastern Europe, inspired by our charity, will truly strengthen the courageous endurance of people who wish to keep their Catholic faith alive. For over fifty years these people experienced a defenselessness against the inroads of atheistic communism and its drive to eradicate life’s religious purpose.

The Church in Central and Eastern Europe must be built anew. Your assistance is necessary to help the Church identify its most pressing needs and take steps to assure that our faith will be passed on. Please be generous in the special offering to be taken at all parish Masses on the weekend of August 8-9, that assists the people in this fragile part of the world.

I ask that you keep the people of Central and Eastern Europe in your prayers, and that we join our fellow Catholics in the United States in making a generous contribution to nourish the faith in this part of Europe.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Robert J. McManus
Bishop of Worcester

Work in faith ...
Labor in love ...
Endure in hope!

We have now reached 95% of our parish goal for this year’s Partners in Charity Appeal, but only three more weeks remain for this appeal. THANK-YOU to the many parishioners who have already contributed. If you have not yet had the opportunity to do so, please support this year’s appeal with your gift or pledge in the month of August. Every gift is important to the 29 ministries that are funded each year through Partners in Charity.

St. Mary’s Goal $175,000
Amount Raised $166,307
Number of Gifts 460

Envelopes for your gift/pledge can be found at the entrances of the church and on the window sills. You may place them in the collection basket today or mail to the pastoral center during the week. Please be sure to check with your employer about a Matching Gift and attach the form to your pledge card.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT - August 8/9

“Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you!” (1 Kings19:7) Jesus knew that the stewardship journey would be difficult, so He gave us the nourishment of the Eucharist. When we take time to join our sacrifice of the Mass, we find the strength to give and joy in our giving.

The cost of this trip is $75 per person and includes a full buffet lunch, show and cabaret. Reservations must be received by August 20th by calling Evelyn 508.845.3511 or Fran 508.842.8567.

Members of Saints Francis & Therese Catholic Worker will be here on the weekend of August 22 and 23, 2009, with our homemade baked goods. The sale of our wholesome bread and muffins, made with organic ingredients, is the main source of income which supports our ministries. We shelter homeless men and women, and we work for justice and peace. There is no set price for the bread as we prefer to depend on your generosity to carry on the works of mercy.

ITEMS OF THE MONTH

The Items of the Month are Condiments: Ketchup, Mustard or Relish. (No glass jars, please!) We're halfway there with only 100 more to go. Thank you for your support!

SHARE THE BOUNTY

August is upon us and is usually the time when a huge bounty of vegetables begins to be brought in by generous parishioners for delivery to the Worcester County Food Bank for distribution to those less fortunate in our community. Though the summer weather has been uncooperative for gardeners, Share the Bounty asks for donations of any size (one tomato, one cucumber-- it all adds up!) from your home garden or market or farmstand. A wicker basket is located in the entrance of the church; please drop off your contributions on the weekends only as delivery is each Monday morning. Thank you!

Celebrating Together, Building Our Community!

In the spirit of the parish expansion plans, the Family Festival Committee is also building on the traditions of St. Mary by once again offering a new and improved Grand Raffle. This year you can double your chances of winning and it won’t cost you any more than last year. That’s right – two Grand Raffle Tickets for $100! Or if you prefer, one ticket for $75. Either way, it’s quite a bargain and a great way to put $15,000 in your pocket. And back by popular demand is the same fantastic second prize – four box seats to the Red Sox/Indians game on October 4th and four premium seats to the Patriots/Jets game on November 22nd!

To purchase your tickets, please click here. Tickets may also be purchased from the Raffle committee after selected Masses. Thanks for supporting St. Mary Parish and School.

Thank You Raffle Sponsor!!

FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OF MARY

Dear Kindergarten Children:

We are going to offer RE classes for any of you who would like to come at 11:00 am on Saturday mornings twice a month. We are so lucky to have Sister Charlene who will be your teacher and she LOVES to teach Kinderbears! So here’s the story: Mom only needs to call the office (508.925.7801) to sign you up. We will start on Saturday, September 26th from 11:00 am – 12:pm in the Kindergarten in the pastoral center. No registration fee just $15.00 for your book and you can bring that to class. What do you think? You will color, sing, listen to stories and learn about how much God loves you! Sound like fun? Hope you can come.

IGNATIAN VOLUNTEER CORPS NEEDS YOU!

Have you ever wondered how you could help those less fortunate than yourself? Are you looking to deepen your faith and spiritual life? Are you 50 yrs. or older, semi-retired or retired, looking to share your time, talent and life experiences with the less fortunate? If your answer is yes, maybe, the Ignatian Volunteer Corps is the answer for you. Our values are based in sharing your experiences gleaned from years of work, education and life experiences with the materially poor. If you are willing to dedicate two days a week to servicing the poor [ministered to through local Service Sites we’ve partnered with in New England] over the next year, while at the same time developing your spiritual life in the Jesuit Ignatian Spiritual “Reflective” process, then IVC could be the answer you’ve been waiting to hear about. Please call Br. Steven Jubin, New England Regional Director at (617)-699-4045 or send him an email [sjubin@ivcusa.org] or go on the IVC Web Site, to learn more about the great things IVC is doing to help the materially poor. During these hard economic times, what a great way of practicing the gospel message of giving back to your fellow man. YOU can make a big difference in people’s lives by the gift of “Yourself.” Do something beautiful for God! Give of your time and talent to your neighbor, who needs your help now.
