ST. MARY’S SHINING STARS
|
|
Shining Stars is an opportunity for parishioners to recognize other parishioners for their stewardship actions and deeds. Do you want to say “thanks” or acknowledge a parish member for being a good steward by using their time, talent or treasure to serve others? You may recognize an individual, a family, a couple, a teenager or child. Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. |
SHINING STAR FOR JULY
Ted & Maureen Coghlin
Truly shining stars in the lives of family, friends, parishioners and mostly, our heavenly Father. Ted and Maureen are loving, caring, and giving…always warm and smiling to all who know them. God Bless Ted and Maureen for all their good works.

Good News!
A generous benefactor has donated $100,000 to post an issuance bond to secure the proposed “Choose Life” license plates in the state of Massachusetts. Through this donation the Choose Life license plate is much closer to becoming a reality here as it is in 22 other states. All that is now required is that approximately 650 additional Massachusetts residents register for it.

A STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT
The Letter to the Ephesians relates to us that God, the Father has established a divine plan to bring all of creation to Christ and that He has blessed us with the divine gifts to help implement that plan.
Christian stewards know what their gifts are and are committed to using them in the service of the Lord. Do we know what our gifts are? Do we believe that God has given us these gifts? Are we committed to using our gifts to serve the Lord?
Walk for the Homeless
|
|
The 24th Annual Walk for the Homeless was another huge success. St. Mary's had over 30 teens and adults that day. It was a privilege to have your support as well as joining with all who dream of a world where everyone has a home. Thank you so much! Jeanne Vaccaro and the Social Justice Committee. |
Item of the Month Update
We would like to thank the parishioners of St. Mary's for generously donating 242 toothbrushes and 164 tubes of toothpaste. These items were graciously accepted by St. Anne's and will be added to this month's food bags. This month our Items of the Month are Condiments: Ketchup, Mustard, or Relish. (No glass jars, please.) Our goal is to collect 200 condiments in order to add one to each food bag that is distributed to needy families in Shrewsbury. If you are having a summer cook-out, please think of us and pick up an extra condiment! Thank you!

Work in faith ...
Labor in love ...
Endure in hope!
Our annual appeal provides the resources which are necessary to continue to the work of 29 charitable, educational and pastoral agencies, ministries and programs absolutely vital to the life of over 300,000 Catholics living in Worcester County. In light of cutbacks in many social service agencies funded by federal, state and local governments, it is especially important that we continue to provide hope for others.
If you have not had the opportunity to do so, please make a gift or pledge to this year’s Partners in Charity appeal. Envelopes have been placed in the pews this weekend as we encourage your participation. Thank-you to all those who have already made their commitment in the past weeks.

The 2009 Family Festival Grand Raffle!
|
|
In the spirit of the parish expansion plans, the Family Festival Committee is also building on the traditions of St. Mary by once again offering a new and improved Grand Raffle. This year you can double your chances of winning and it won’t cost you any more than last year. That’s right two Grand Raffle Tickets for $100! Or if you prefer, one ticket for $75. Either way, it’s quite a bargain and a great way to put $15,000 in your pocket. And back by popular demand is the same fantastic second prize four box seats to the Red Sox/Indians game on October 4th and four premium seats to the Patriots/Jets game on November 22nd! |
Tickets will be available after all Sunday masses. Please visit the Raffle Committee in the Church entrance to purchase your tickets. As a special Sunday incentive this year, if you purchase two tickets after a Mass, you will have the chance to spin the wheel-of-luck and be entered into a special drawing for a free raffle ticket. So buy your tickets now, spin the wheel-of-luck and increase your odds of winning!
Altar Server Training
Thanks goes out to the 51 altar servers who attended one of three training workshops held recently. Your commitment to continuing to grow in this important ministry is noticed and appreciated!
PROPAGATION OF THE FAITH CO-OP
We welcome Fr. Philip Pitya to St. Mary’s this weekend as he preaches at all of the Masses as part of the Propagation of the Faith. Today’s second collection will be for the support of the South Sudan Missions. Thank you for your support.
ARCHDIOCESE OF JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN
Current Situation and Needs:
Our country, the Sudan, is one of the African nations being devastated by a vicious civil war. The war is being waged by the Arabicized, Northern Sudanese radical Moslems against the black African communities in south Sudan, the Nuba Mountains, southern Blue Nile and Darfur, many of whom are either Christians or adherents to the African Traditional religions. Southern Sudan in general and Juba in particular is at the epic center of the endemic Sudanese war, with it catastrophic consequences on our communities.
The Islamic fundamentalist military rulers want to eliminate our Christian and traditional communities in order to establish a pure theocratic Islamic state in the Sudan. The declared Jihad, holy war, against us Christians, and since 1983 the Sudanese arm forces aided by Moslem militia trained and armed by the government have conducted a scorched earth campaign in southern Sudan. Our communities were bombarded repeatedly, villages burned to the ground, men were killed, while young women and children are abducted and deported to slavery. Even as I write, the Islamist radicals are engaging in conducting a war of attrition in south Sudan despite the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement. In Darfur, the atrocious violation of human rights and dignity continues on unabated.
Our people are desperate. They have lost everything and are unable to help themselves. The humanitarian organizations are being prevented form assisting our people. Many, particularly the most vulnerable children and the elderly are dying daily from starvation and curable diseases.
We in the church are the only hope for our people. Our clergy, religious, catechist, and lay leaders are fighting against all odds to keep the flames of faith burning in our country despite the vicious persecution by the Moslems. While burying the dead, supporting the survivors, sheltering the displaced, healing the wounded and broken hearted, and feeding the orphans and displaced children, widows and the elderly we continue to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Chris vigorously, build the Church and consolidate faith in our country. We need your help to continue to keep hope alive among our desperate, oppressed people. I am therefore appealing to you our brothers and sisters in faith to help us in our struggle for survival. Thank you in advance for standing in solidarity with us in our time of need. May our risen savior, Jesus Christ bless you with the fullness of grace, peace and health.
Fraternally,
Fr. Philip Pitya

Novena to Saint Anne - July 18-26, 2009

The theme of the 2009 annual Novena, “Where Do We Find Hope?” comes at a time when many of our parishioners in the diocese are feeling challenged by the economy and world events that touch them daily. Our faith does give us hope in the midst of our trials, and by taking the time to pause, reflect and renew our trust in the Lord, we strengthen our faith and find our hope again.
