THANK-YOU to all who attended last week’s Groundbreaking Celebration with Bishop George Rueger. It was a great day for our parish to celebrate the life we share in this faith community. Thank-you to the Capital Campaign Steering Committee for hosting the reception which followed in the parish hall.
We also express our appreciation to the following for joining us for this special day in the life of our parish community:
I would like to share with you the news that the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, has conferred the honor of Chaplain to His Holiness upon seven of our priests here in the Diocese of Worcester. Please join me in congratulating the following:
I also ask that you mark your calendars to join together in prayer on August 14 at 7:00 pm at the Cathedral of St. Paul as these men are publicly recognized at the celebration of First Vespers for the Fest of the Assumption of Mary. The June edition of our parish newsletter has been mailed to all of our parish households. We are so grateful to MARY DONOVAN for all she has done to make this publication possible. Pro-Life License Plate
There is an effort underway to encourage the state of Massachusetts to create a specialty license plate with the slogan “Choose Life.” Funds generated by a Massachusetts’ Choose Life plate would assist women with the expenses of a full term pregnancy such as medical bills, temporary housing, food and maternity clothing. Applications will be available at Masses in the weeks ahead, along with representatives from the St. Mary’s parish Pro-Life Ministry. Deadline is June 30, 2009.
ST. MARY’S SHINING STARS
Shining Stars is an opportunity for parishioners to recognize other parishioners for their stewardship actions and deeds. Do you want to say “thanks” or acknowledge a parish member for being a good steward by using their time, talent or treasure to serve others? You may recognize an individual, a family, a couple, a teenager or child.
Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

SHINING STAR FOR JUNE Deanna Siciliano |
![]() |
“I would like to say a few words about a great young Mom I know. Her name is Deanna and she has three children who go to St. Mary’s School. She is a stay at home Mom and is very dedicated to her family. She prays with them daily and is even teaching them the rosary at nights. She has given coats, clothes and shoes to families who need them in this time of financial crisis She is a great listener to mothers who need it and is a very humble person. She belongs to the MOM’s group here at St. Mary’s and goes to the rosary group on Monday nights when she prays for our parish, school, priests and our families. She is an inspiration to all of what a holy mother should be. I admire her greatly.”

We will be discussing the ministry's direction in the coming year, so please bring your ideas. The 2009 Family Festival Celebrating Together!
|
|
This year the theme of the Family Festival is Celebrating Together Builds Our Community. We hope you join us on September 18, 19 and 20, 2009 to celebrate the tradition of the St. Mary Family Festival. This weekend we are kicking off one of the most exciting attractions of the Festival the Grand Raffle. The Raffle is always one of the most anticipated parts of the festival and this year’s grand prize of $15,000 is sure to attract a lot of attention. The second prize this year is just as exciting four box seats to the Red Sox/Indians game on October 4th and four premium seats to the Patriots/Jets game on November 22nd! Tickets will be available after all Sunday masses. Please visit the Raffle Committee to purchase your tickets. As a special Sunday incentive this year, if you purchase two tickets after a Mass, you will have the chance to spin the wheel-of-luck and win an additional ticket. The greater your investment, the greater your odds of winning an extra chance at these great prizes! |

Work in faith ...
Labor in love ...
Endure in hope!
Bishop McManus has asked all parishes in the diocese to undertake one final appeal to parishioners on behalf of the Annual Partners in Charity Appeal. Currently we have reached 85% of our diocesan goal with over eighteen thousand Catholics in the diocese of Worcester who have already made a donation. In recent years we have typically had better results by this time. We all recognize the impact of current economic conditions on our campaign as well as similar charitable appeals in our communities.
Our annual appeal provides the resources which are necessary to continue to the work of 29 charitable, educational and pastoral agencies, ministries and programs absolutely vital to the life of over 300,000 Catholics living in Worcester County. In light of cutbacks in many social service agencies funded by federal, state and local governments, it is especially important that we continue to provide hope for others.
If you have not had the opportunity to do so, please make a gift or pledge to this year’s Partners in Charity appeal. Envelopes will be placed in the pews this weekend and next as we encourage your participation. Thank-you to all those who have already made their commitment in the past weeks.
St. Mary’s Goal $175,000
Amount Raised in Pledges/Gifts $145,009
Number of Gifts. 403
Items of the Month: Toothpaste and Toothbrushes
St. Mary’s Social Justice Ministry is launching an Item of the Month drive to support St. Anne’s Food Pantry which distributes over 200 food bags each month to over 150 Shrewsbury residents and families in need. During June we will be collecting toothpaste and toothbrushes and we will highlight a different item each month. Our goal is to collect 200 of each item to add to the food staples in the monthly food bags. Collection bins are located in the front vestibule and downstairs in the lobby
Looking at the Economic Crisis Through the Lens of Faith
Monday, June 22 6:30-8:30 pm
The Johnson Room at Christ the King Church
1052 Pleasant Street, Worcester
Where is God in this current economic crisis? How can faith help us in these difficult times? What can psychology teach us about effective ways of coping with this economy? Dr. Neil Castronova and Dr. Virginia Ryan will be presenters. All are welcome and the program is free. Contact Ray Griffin, ray.j.griffin@gmail.com or 508.304.1745.
The theme for the 2009 Collection, Cast the Light of Christ Upon the World, echoes the theme of the Holy Father’s apostolic journey to the United States last year. While speaking at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City, he said “In the finest traditions of the Church in this country, may you also be the first friend of the poor, the homeless, the stranger, the sick and all who suffer. Act as beacons of hope, casting the light of Christ upon the world.” This annual collection allows the Holy Father to respond quickly to those who suffer as a result of oppression, natural disasters, war and disease. Your contribution is vital to these charitable works. Last year, the funds collected in the United States made up nearly one-third of all donations worldwide. Your support truly makes a difference, and it is central to the pope’s labors for the Church. As we participate in the appeal generously, we join Catholics throughout the world in a loving expression of solidarity. Morever, we share in the concern of the successor of Peter for the many different needs of the universal Church and for the relief of those most in need around the globe. Let us join the Holy Father in his mission. With every prayerful best wish, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, |
