Dear Friends,

Today’s celebration of Palm Sunday marks the beginning of another Holy Week. Each year we commemorate in a special way the events of Jesus’ last days on earth. These celebrations complete the season of Lent and our preparation for Easter Sunday. It is only in walking through the shadows and darkness of Holy Week and Good Friday, that we can truly understand the light and hope of Sunday morning.

PALM SUNDAY. This Sunday observes the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem that was marked by the crowds, who were there for Passover, waving palm branches and proclaiming him as the messiah. This Sunday is also known as Passion Sunday to commemorate the beginning Holy Week and Jesus’ final agonizing journey to the cross.

HOLY THURSDAY is the night we remember Jesus sharing the Last Supper with his disciples and giving them the gift of the Eucharist. We re-enact Jesus washing the feet of his disciples and remember how we are all called to serve one another. Even as Jesus and his disciples came together to share this meal, they already stood in the shadow of the cross. It was later that night, after the meal, as Jesus and His disciples were praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, that Jesus was arrested. Adoration of the Eucharist continues after Mass this night so that we may remain with the Lord and pray.

GOOD FRIDAY finds a variety of services of worship all aimed at allowing us to experience some sense of the pain, humiliation and ending in the journey to the cross. The Stations of the Cross held in mid-afternoon correspond to the final words of Jesus from the cross around 3pm. The evening service includes the reading of the Passion, the veneration of the cross and communion.

HOLY SATURDAY is a day of preparation as we remember Jesus in the tomb. As the sun sets people gather in vigil to light the Easter fire and proclaim the resurrection of Jesus. Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist are celebrated since it is in these sacraments that we are joined to the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. This is our day to celebrate the new life we have because of Jesus Christ.

Please make a special effort this week to join us as we celebrate these sacred and ancient liturgies of the church. Easter Sunday and the fifty days of Easter will have so much more meaning for us if we take time to remember the love that Jesus poured out for us on the cross.

Fr. Mike

Work in faith ...
Labor in love ...
Endure in hope!

In this Year of St. Paul we renew our commitment to the essential charitable, educational and pastoral needs of our diocese. We give thanks to God for an abundance of blessings: for family and prosperity, for faith and Church and parish. We thank God for love and for health, for the forgiveness of sins, for the gift of the Eucharist, and for our country and its freedoms. Please support this year’s PARTNERS IN CHARITY appeal which is now underway in our parish. This annual appeal provides the resources which are necessary to continue the work of 29 agencies, ministries and programs so vital to the life of over 300,000 Catholics living in Worcester County.

THANK-YOU to those parishioners who have already made their gift/pledge to this year’s Partners in Charity appeal. This weekend we continue the IN-PEW collection for Partners in Charity. Please put your gift/pledge envelope in the collection basket today.

ST. MARY’S BUILDING PROJECT UPDATE

Plans are still on track for our parish building project. The family that had been living in the “little brown house” for the past year was able to move into a new apartment three weeks ago. The contents of the house were donated to Catholic Charities and Donations Clearinghouse. Fr. Mike, Fr. Adam & Fr. Leo are now busy packing up the rectory in preparation for their move to Red Coat Rd. on April 17th. Before the demolition work begins during the week of April 20th, Matthew 25, which rehabs homes in Worcester, will come to remove some materials which they will be able to use in their projects.

THANK-YOU to all those parishioners who have recently made their pledge to the Capital Campaign – Our Enduring Covenant. Thanks also to those parishioners who have been faithfully making payments on their pledges. If you have not had an opportunity yet to make your pledge, we encourage you to do so in the coming weeks. Pledge envelopes and brochures can be found with the bulletins or at the pastoral center during the week.

Dismas House - Volunteers Needed

Dismas House is located on a quiet street in inner city Worcester , Dismas House is a residential program for former prisoners. Legend has it that Dismas was the name of the “good thief” who was crucified with Jesus, and the directors of Dismas House have made it their mission to offer a second chance to those who have served time and been released from prison. In their words, “Dismas offers a chance to reconcile former prisoners with society and society with former prisoners, through the creation of a supportive community”.

St. Mary’s Social Justice ministry is looking to cook, serve and break bread with the residents of Dismas House on Friday, April 17th. We welcome anyone who would like to help in any way. We will gather at about 4p.m. and be done with the meal and clean-up by 7p.m. If you would like to be part of this new parish ministry, please contact Joan Fouhy at 508 842 6724 or Gina Kuruvilla at 508 523 3958. Thank you!
