STEWARDS ARE GOD’S SHING STARS
Stars of Saint Mary’s light our world

SHINGING STARS is an opportunity for parishioners to recognize other parishioners for their stewardship actions and deeds. It is a way to say “thanks” or acknowledge a parish member for living the life of stewardship. Thank-you to those who have already submitted the name of a shining star at St. Mary’s. Today we announce March’s shining star:

JEAN MARIE CAREY

Jean is my friend and neighbor who has helped me so much. I can see what she does for St. Mary’s, such as Baptisms and CCD, and I’m sure much more. Jean has long working hours and still finds time to help others. Thank-you Jean for what you do for St. Mary’s and for me.

THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

Deep within our hearts, O God, you have written your law,
and high upon the cross you have lifted up our salvation,
the Savior made perfect in suffering.
From the death of that single grain sown in the weary earth,
bring forth in this Lenten springtime a rich harvest of life.
As the hour of his passion draws near, glorify your name,
and in our baptismal renewal, let it be glorified again.

DAILY MASS will be celebrated at 6:45 am (Monday – Friday) and 8:30 am (Monday – Saturday) during the season of Lent. Join us each day to be fed with God’s Word and the Eucharist. The students at St. Mary School will join us for the 8:30 am Mass on Thursday, March 19th as we celebrate the Feast of St. Joseph.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRAYER include the ROSARY at 7:30 pm on Monday evenings in the pastoral center chapel and ADORATION OF THE EUCHARIST on Fridays from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. Join us.

CHURCH CLEANING

Shadow of The Cross

Date: Friday evening, April 3, 2009
Time: 7pm – St. Mary’s Church
Music provided by: St. Mary’s, St. Ann’s, St. Mary’s of the Hills

The Shadow of The Cross by Lloyd Larson is a musical setting with narrative passages and songs that focuses on the final hours of Jesus’ life and crucifixion. It reminds us of the magnitude of God’s love, a love so great that it continues through all time and eternity. For Shadows to exist there must be light. In the case of the Passion story of our Lord, that light, as the gospel of John tells us, “was the light of all people”. But as John affirms “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it”.

Candles are extinguished after the completion of each choral piece with the intent to underscore the gradual and deepening darkness as Christ death becomes imminent and final – The service ends in almost complete darkness and the congregation departs in silence and reflection.

PALM SUNDAY READERS NEEDED

Volunteers are needed to participate in the reading of the Passion Gospel on Palm Sunday, April 4 & 5. We need 12 readers for the 4:30, 9:00, 11:00 and 5:30 Masses. All are welcome – teens, adults and lectors. Sign up sheets can be found today in the sacristy. There will be a rehearsal of the reading of the Passion in the church on Saturday, April 4th at 12 noon.

PALM SUNDAY FOR CHILDREN

On Palm Sunday, April 5th, a special Children’s Procession and Liturgy of the Word will take place at the 9:00 am Mass. Children will gather with their families in the church and take part in a procession from the church to the parish hall where they will hear a children’s version of the Passion story. After this Liturgy of the Word the children will then rejoin their families in church as they usually do at the 9:00 am Mass.

Dismas House - Volunteers Needed

Dismas House is located on a quiet street in inner city Worcester , Dismas House is a residential program for former prisoners. Legend has it that Dismas was the name of the “good thief” who was crucified with Jesus, and the directors of Dismas House have made it their mission to offer a second chance to those who have served time and been released from prison. In their words, “Dismas offers a chance to reconcile former prisoners with society and society with former prisoners, through the creation of a supportive community”.

St. Mary’s Social Justice ministry is looking to cook, serve and break bread with the residents of Dismas House on Friday, April 17th. We welcome anyone who would like to help in any way. We will gather at about 4p.m. and be done with the meal and clean-up by 7p.m. If you would like to be part of this new parish ministry, please contact Joan Fouhy at 508 842 6724 or Gina Kuruvilla at 508 523 3958. WORK IN FAITH - LIVE IN LOVE - ENDURE IN HOPE

St. Mary’s in joining many other parishes across the Diocese of Worcester in conducting the annual Partners in Charity Appeal during the Lenten season. The Annual Partners in Charity Appeal supports 29 vital programs which comprise the charitable, educational and ministerial mission of our local church. Your gift to the appeal this year will provide assistance for the poor, the sick, the young, the disabled, families in crisis, and many thousands more. Our appeal is an opportunity to provide for the needs of others who look to us for hope. Please reflect on the blessings you have received from God as you contemplate a gift to the Partners in Charity Appeal this year.

This weekend we will conduct the IN-PEW collection for Partners in Charity. Please put the gift/pledge envelope you received in the mail last week in with today’s offertory collection. You may also use one of the envelopes found at the end of the pews.

YOUR VOICE IS NEEDED TO PROTECT CONSCIENCE RIGHTS!

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is inviting public comment on a proposal to rescind an important federal regulation issued in December. It implements and enforces three federal laws protecting the conscience rights of health care providers, especially those at risk of being discriminated against because of their moral or religious objection to abortion. It is critical that the Catholic community speak out to protect Catholic doctors, nurses, and hospitals. To learn more and to send an email expressing your support for conscience protection before April 9th deadline, go to www.usccb.org/conscienceprotection.
