THE THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT

Holy is your name, O Lord our God.
Incline our hearts to keep your commandment,
and school us in the sublime wisdom of the cross,
so that free from sin,
which imprisons us in our own self-centeredness,
we may open ourselves to the gift of your Spirit.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Jesus’ cleansing of the Temple is a familiar story as the prophets Jeremiah, Zechariah and Malachi prophesied that when the Kingdom of God was at hand, the Temple would be cleansed of all activities unworthy of an encounter with God. Stewards of the Lord’s abundant gifts are referred to as the Temple of the Lord. What are we doing to be cleansed of activities unworthy of an encounter with the Lord? What are we doing to cleanse our Temple and make sacred space for the gift of our Savior, Jesus Christ?

DAILY MASS will be celebrated at 6:45 am (Monday – Friday) and 8:30 am (Monday – Saturday) during the season of Lent. Join us each day to be fed with God’s Word and the Eucharist. The students at St. Mary School will join us for the 8:30 am Mass on Thursday, March 19th as we celebrate the Feast of St. Joseph.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRAYER include the ROSARY at 7:30 pm on Monday evenings in the pastoral center chapel and ADORATION OF THE EUCHARIST on Fridays from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. Join us.

They will join us today at the 11:00 am Mass as we celebrate the First Scrutiny and the Presentation of the Creed to Tong Thai.

ST. MARY’S BUILDING PROJECT UNDERWAY

Over the past two years St. Mary’s Parish has been conducting a Capital Campaign to raise money for the expansion and renovation of our parish buildings. Thus far Our Enduring Covenant has raised more than $3.3 million in gifts and pledges from 441 parishioners. Another 50 parishioners have been making contributions through the monthly envelope without a pledge. Now with the announcement that construction will begin this spring, we are hopeful and confident that those who have been waiting for this news will now be ready to make their commitment.

The original goal of OUR ENDURING COVENANT was $7.5 million. We have scaled back the scope of the building project and will not be adding on to the church worship space at this time. All of the other components of the building and renovation project remain. We have now readjusted our fundraising goal to $5 million. While the Diocese of Worcester will loan us the necessary funds for construction this spring, we still need to raise an additional $1.7 million in gifts and pledges. Every gift is important and we encourage all of our parishioners to make a pledge to the campaign according to their means

The time has come to make your pledge, and with your support and prayers, we will continue to sustain our enduring covenant, building on the earlier efforts of those who have helped to build up the faith in our Catholic community. Pledge envelopes can be found in the sacristy after Mass today or at the pastoral center during the week. For more information, please contact the Pastoral Center at 508.845.6341 or click here.

CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES

My Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

I call upon the people of our diocese to continue their tradition of aiding the needy and of giving the remarkable gift of hope to others through the 2009 Catholic Relief Services Collection. This collection will be taken at the Lord’s Day Masses in all the parishes throughout our diocese next weekend, March 21 and 22.

When we act with compassion, generosity and commitment to justice for the “least among us,” we act as the Lord’s true disciples. This appeal, with its theme “Give Hope to Jesus in Disguise,” enables the bishops of the United States to assist people in need throughout the world. I assure that your personal generosity to the collection is vital to our labors to extend the Church’s ministry of charity to the poor and dispossessed.

We offer hope to the poor through our generous love. Pope Benedict XVI, in his encyclical letter, On Christian Hope, spoke eloquently of this when he wrote, “It is important to know that I can always continue to hope that my own life and history in general, despite all failures, are held firm by the indestructible power of Love…only this kind of hope can then give the courage to act and to persevere.” (Spe Salvi, no. 35)

When you give to the Catholic Relief Services Collection you are assisting millions of the poor throughout the world. I am grateful for your generosity.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Robert J. McManus
Bishop of Worcester

The Annual Partners in Charity Appeal supports 29 vital programs which comprise the charitable, educational and ministerial mission of our local church.
