STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS
Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time • February 15, 2009
The fate of a leper is a great tragedy at any time and place. In Jesus’ time, lepers were considered condemned, part of the plagues God sent as punishment. They were cast out of society and abandoned. St. Mark’s Gospel reveals the unthinkable.
Jesus reaches out and touches a leper. He risks catching the contagious disease and heals the man. As the gospel story teaches, no one is abandoned in Christ. Are there those in our society or in our personal lives for whom we ascribe no hope, who we have abandoned, treated like lepers? Or as Christ’s stewards of our sisters and brothers, do we risk reaching out and touching those who may seem to us to be “unclean” or not worthy of our time or attention?

A WORD OF THANKS Dear Boys and Girls of Grades 1-4 and Households of Faith, I want to thank you so much for thinking of HOPE during the Christmas Season. It was so very kind of you to take the time to pick out special gifts for our families. I believe that presents which come from the heart are the best kind to receive, and children certainly know how to choose great gifts for other children. I hope you are enjoying this snowy winter, remember to wear your hats and mittens to keep you warm and toasty. Many Blessings, |

Dear Friends at St. Mary, Shrewsbury: Last summer, I came to speak about the needs of the Home of Hope orphanage in India. As you may remember, these girls -- age 6 to 18 -- victims of poverty, neglect and abuse, were living in the safe haven of Home of Hope, but their surroundings were pretty grim. They were sleeping on the floor; they had no place to study after school, they didn’t even have a place to sit down during the day, except on the ground. I promised to report back to you and I am happy to be able to tell you that your mission collection has helped to build them a fine new building, where each of them will have their own bed. I just got back from the dedication and it brought me to tears to see them so carefully, almost reverently, take off their shoes even before entering the new building. And now under construction in front of the building is the “Fountain of Hope.” Soon there will be a plaque on the rim of the fountain with the name of your generous parish, so you will be remembered each day. Also, I will be bringing Sister Sophy from India this April, along with Rajeswari, one of the orphan girls at Home of Hope. We are now making arrangements to visit St. Mary; I will let you know as soon as a date is confirmed. By mail, I am sending a beautiful color photo of the building and fountain, suitable for framing. Many thanks. You have done something beautiful for God, Paul Wilkes, Coordinator, Home of Hope India |
