FORMING CONSCIENCES FOR FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP

With the conclusion of the Democratic and Republican Conventions and the presidential campaigns now in full gear, we know that Election Day on November 4th will soon be here. For many years the bishops of the United States have sought to share Catholic teaching on political life through a series of statements issued every four years focusing on political responsibility and faithful citizenship. This year’s statement highlights the role of the Church in the formation of conscience, and the corresponding moral responsibility of each Catholic to hear, receive and act upon the Church’s teaching in the lifelong task of forming his or her own conscience. With this foundation, Catholics are better able to evaluate policy positions, party platforms and candidates’ promises and actions in light of the Gospel and the moral and social teaching of the Church in order to help build a better world. A summary of the Bishop’s Statement will be available later this month or you may download the full statement by visiting www.faithfulcitizenship.org. Voter guides from the Mass Catholic Conference and Faithful Citizenship, which do not favor one candidate over another, will also be available in the coming weeks.

ST. MARY’S RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE - In answer to numerous questions to us, the positions of the two Presidential candidates on abortion related issues are as follows according to the Mass. Citizens for Life in Boston: John McCain is pro-life and supports a ban on partial birth abortion as well as parental consent for underage girls. Barack Obama is pro-choice, even opposing a partial birth abortion ban and parental consent for underage girls. For more info call Mass Citizens at the Scrafft Center in Boston at 1.617.242.4199.

ADULT CHOIR - At the 11:00 Mass on September 21st our adult choir will return to their rightful place in the loft after a well-deserved summer break. St. Mary’s is extremely blessed to have such dedicated and committed choir members. The music they offer enhances our liturgies immeasurably, and they in turn enjoy and value the experience of a close-knit community of music-lovers. Perhaps you have considered joining the choir before…now is the time! As the hymn exclaims, “All Are Welcome!” Being part of the choir means a weekly rehearsal on Sunday morning for an hour and a half (9:00AM – 10:30AM; no weeknight rehearsals) and participation in the 11:00 liturgy (September through May). Please consider carefully whether this is your year to praise God in song. If you have questions or simply want to get a sense of what it means to be part of the choir feel free to call or email our choir director, Marti Page 508.835.3470 martipage127@charter.net or our liturgical music director, Rick Vacca 508.753.0230, rpav21@gmail.com

SHARE THE BOUNTY

If your garden is yielding vegetables, please consider contributing some of your bounty to feed those less fortunate in our community. Donations of veggies from parishioner gardens and/or farm stands is collected in the large basket in the back of church on weekends and delivered to the Worcester County Food Bank on Monday mornings for timely distribution to local food pantries. Thank you for your generosity!

Please plan to share the bounty from your garden (or local farmstand) with those less fortunate in our community as we present these gifts during the 9am Mass next Sunday, Sept. 14th. During the offertory procession, in addition to the bread and wine, we will offer produce from the parish garden as well as parishioners' gardens. Children and adults are welcome to join the procession as we offer our gifts.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

RCIA Open House

If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a Catholic or if you are a Catholic who would like to complete your initiation through the sacraments of Confirmation and/or Eucharist, the Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) can help. The RCIA forms adults in the Catholic faith and prepares them for the sacraments of initiation. For additional information please call Fr. Mike, Fr. Adam or Deacon Frank at the pastoral center. An RCIA Open House will be held on Sunday, September 14 at 7:00 pm in the Pastoral Center. All are welcome.

It is time again for us to make a joyful noise to God with songs of praise! Come join us at the 9 am liturgy starting on 9/7/2008. New members always welcome. If interested, please call 508.854.2499 (Kristin) or 508.865.2903 (Mary). We'd also like to take a minute to welcome our newest cantor addition to the 9 a.m. liturgy, Janice Higgins.
