Family Life Program Fosters Personal Growth

By JOANNE GANNON, Principal, St. Mary’s School

Committed to the Church’s belief in family education and in keeping with our mission to develop intelligent, moral leaders, we provide the Benziger Family Life Program to all students in grades two through eight. This program helps to foster in our children personal growth, Catholic moral development, and respect for life. Centered on five of God’s gifts – family, self, life, sexuality, and community – the curriculum for each grade level helps young people see, internalize, and act upon Catholic values. It extends our religion program and affirms family life in all its forms.

Our program at St. Mary School is taught by classroom teachers. All of our teachers are committed Catholic women and men, many parents themselves, all family members. They know their students well and lead them in discussions around the five themes. Parents are provided with a Parent Connection magazine. This magazine has informative articles on Catholic parenting, morality, and emotional and spiritual growth. Practical ideas on nutrition, environmental responsibility, healthand safety, family fun, and prayer are included as well as features that explain to parents what their children will be learning in class.

This is our ninth year of teaching the Family Life Program. Most parents are familiar with the student texts and the curriculum used. Any parent may preview the complete curriculum or that of a specific grade level if they wish to do so.

The program depends upon and encourages parental support and involvement. The program is an enriching experience in support of Catholic family life.
