Two Letters Tell of Seventh-graders Good Deeds

April 23, 2006

Laura,

I have enclosed two photos taken from our recent visit to Department of Social Services, Worcester Office.

I was looking for a meaningful project the children could connect with and found information on a project whereby Care Bags are filled with necessary items for children brought into the foster are system quickly These bags contain age-appropriate items such as toiletries, paper/pens, magazines, brushes, combs, decks of cards, etc. that the children would call their own in their new temporary environment.

In our seventh grade home CCD class, we discussed what children their age world need if they needed to be moved from their home quickly due to an emergency or domestic situation and why these items are important. We decorated and filed the bags in class and wrote brief notes to a child who might be getting that particular bag.

During school vacation week, I was able to gather a few of the children and bring them down to DSS on Front Street, Worcester, to donate the bags and meet some of the social workers involved n the program.  The workers were thrilled with the donations and gave the children a brief tour of the current offices.

I am hoping to work with Target (waiting for a call back) to make more Care Bags for children in DSS foster care placement.

Dear CCD Students

It was very nice to met Mr. and Mrs. Sanguinet along with Holly and her brother at St. Anne’s Human Services when they came to deliver the food collected for the needy here in the Town of Shrewsbury.

Your efforts will have an impact on our ability to continue to distribute non-perishable items to our many clients. As I explained, we not only have families who have financial problems due to layoffs but also over 30 Senior Citizens who struggle to pay their bills each month.

Thanks to all seven members of the Seventh Grace CCD class. Sharing and caring of people like you helps make life easier for so many. May god bless you all.

Love and peace,
Peg Rakauskas
Secretary, St. Anne’s Human Services
