Social Justice Deals with Diverse Issues

By Joan Fouhy, chair, Social Justice Ministry

The Social Justice Committee's agenda covers a wide range of activities. Events already scheduled or in the planning stages deal with society’s pressing issues. Some of these are: outreach to the victims of natural disaster, raising awareness of hunger and homelessness, providing aid to people in our local area who need help as well as sending aid to others beyond our borders.

The schedule includes a concert, fundraisers, a Walk for the Hungry, Habitat for Humanity as well as other opportunities. There's room for everyone to help out in some way - the Little Brown House, the Parish Garden/Share the Bounty programs which benefit the Worcester County Food Bank, Heifer Project International and aid to Haiti.

A high point of the year is the benefit concert. Last year's concert raised funds for Darfur in the Sudan. This year's concert will benefit the victims of the earthquake in Pakistan. It will be held on Saturday, April 29. Last year’s concert was a resounding success. The word is out that this year's will be even better.

Possible fundraisers are on the drawing boards for Haiti and for the Little Brown House. The Walk for the Homeless will take place on Sunday, June 4. Registration is at 1:30 p.m. It will start at 2 p.m. This 3-mile walk that starts at City Hall in Worcester benefits several projects designed to prevent homelessness and help people caught up in it
