Transition Year is One of Trauma

Transition Year is One of Trauma

By Michael Anthony, transition chair of St. Mary’s Parish Council

This has been a year unlike any other at St. Mary’s. From the tragedy at the annual fall festival to the death of the Holy Father to the impending farewell of our beloved priests, I have never experienced so many changes (and challenges) in our faith community.

My term as Chair is just one year (I am filling in for Jim Hassett, who recently left for opportunity and warmer weather), and that year is quickly coming to an end. I envisioned my time as Parish Council Chair as a transition year- a year in which the Parish Council members (and especially the new members) could have their voices heard, ideas implemented, and leaders emerge. The Council has responded admirably.

During my years on the Parish Council, I have learned much about the many ministries supported by our community. Many, many people dedicate many hours with little recognition (sought or received). The more I have learned about St. Mary’s community, the more I am humbled by the talent and dedication of not only its leaders, but also its members. Believe me, fellow parishioners, you are well represented and well served.

And we have been extraordinarily well served by our dedicated clergy. It is with tremendous sadness that we say good bye to two of the most wonderful men I have had the privilege to know. St. Mary’s has been blessed by the presence our spiritual leaders. My time on the council has helped me gain insight into the complexity of leading such a large community. The incredible dedication these men have shown to us is a lesson I will never forget.

The truth is, I have spent the last few weeks literally stunned by the impending departure of our cherished priests. I am profoundly grateful for their years of dedication to our community. I wish them well, and have no doubt they will meet their next challenge with the grace and courage we have all witnessed these past years. No doubt, their next communities will quickly come to appreciate the exceptional talents of Father Dennis and Father Paul.

Finally, let me share with you a statement made by our humble pastor at the last Parish Council meeting. We council members were expressing our sadness at Father Paul’s departure. Father Paul, ever alert for the chance to insert a light hearted comment, stated, “Don’t worry - in a few months you’ll be calling me ‘old Father what’s his name’...”

Father Paul, let me assure you, you will always be known as that extraordinary pastor Paul O’Connell- dedicated priest, insightful homilist, community leader, and the most faith filled man I have known. Your leadership has inspired and challenged me and many others in more ways than you will ever know. You will always be remembered, and remembered as a man of faith, peace, and humility.

Farewell and peace be with you.
