Sharing Faith a Plus for New Assistant Principal

James Ferdella Joins Staff at St. Maryís School

Dear Parishioners,

Father Paul suggested that I write a brief letter introducing myself to you. What follow are a short biography and a few observations from someone who has been here only a short time.

I currently live in Leicester MA, with my wife of 35 years. We have three daughters: Kimberly, who teaches at the Leicester Middle School, and coaches at Leicester High; Karyn, who teaches and coaches at Auburn High School; and Julie, who attends Springfield College, where she is studying to be a physical education teacher and a coach.

I am a career educator of thirty-six years. I have taught students ranging from grades six to 12, while assuming a variety of positions. The last 31 years were spent at Shepherd Hill Regional High School, where I taught various math courses, coached the Varsity Boys Basketball Team, directed a program for at-risk students, taught driver education, and served as Assistant Principal.

The only thing I missed as a public school educator was the ability to share my faith with my colleagues and especially my students. I am sincerely thankful for the opportunity to do this at St. Mary School. Everyone I have spoken to emphasized that St. Mary School/Parish is a "special place," a place that maintains educational excellence while fostering an environment of spiritual growth. These attributes were clearly demonstrated recently, following the unfortunate accident at the Festival. Our leadership, as provided by Father Paul and Joanne Gannon, was outstanding. But, what amazed me most was the immediate support we received from so many people. Personnel from the school, parishioners, and parents, immediately rallied to organize a plan that would be supportive to our students, our faculty, our parishioners, and our community. The entire process was handled expediently, professionally, and with compassion. Yes!! This is a special place.

In closing, I extend a special thanks to all who have made me feel welcome. Since my arrival it seems that everyone has extended his or her hand to me, and for this I will be forever grateful. I thank God for the opportunity to be here.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Jim Ferdella
