Prayer, Service, Social, Education, and Our Future; Where Does It All Fit?

By Joanne Gannon, Principal, St. Mary School

You may not think of putting these words together. At St. Mary School they are words to describe what is going on at any one time in our school. They are part of our parish mission statement.

We Pray Together
The school children will be attending a different monthly Mass each month. This will present an opportunity for our children to learn about a variety of saint’s days and holy days. Please join us. The schedule of Masses: October 2 Guardian Angels, November 3 St. Martin de Porres, December 8 Immaculate Conception, January 15 Peace and Social Justice, February 25 Ash Wednesday, March 19 St. Joseph, April 29 St. Catherine of Sienna, May 20 Ascension of Christ, June 4 First Friday.

Our Christmas pageant, “Christmas Special Delivery” will be on Thursday, December 18th. We will have two shows, at 1:00p.m. and 7:00p.m. This is a beautiful way of coming together using a prayerful theme to celebrate the coming of Jesus. A second treat this spring will be the junior production of Godspell. We will make sure you know the date and times.

Service to our Parish
The annual senior luncheon sponsored by the parents’ association was held Friday, November 21. The students at St. Mary School provided the entertainment and service. to you.

A Social Life
Our basket ball season is well under way. We have basketball teams for both girls and boys in grades five through eight. These games get all of our fans out of the house and we enjoy cheering for our teams.

Education for Life
We started off our year with an introduction to our parish theme, “We Are Called.” We will build on this theme each month with a character education word to learn and live each day. The character education words for the months of October, November, and December are respect, honesty, and self-control. A variety of activities will be presented to enable our students to have a deeper understanding of what each word means and what behaviors or attitudes are noticeable when these values are at work in their lives.
